Rotary Boosts Net Campaign the cambodia daily The Rotary Club of Phnom Penh has boosted the Cambodia Daily Mosquito Net Campaign with a donation of nearly $2,500. Rotary Club President Josette Laau personally gave an additional $500, bringing the total to $2,976. The donation was presented at a recent club meeting at the Inter-Continental Hotel. The money will be used to buy mosquito nets for more than 1,700 refugees in the town of Sisophon near the Thai border. Rotary International is a philanthropic organization famous around the world, dedicated to community service, fellowship and ethics. The Phnom Penh chapter, the only one in Cambodia, was started in October 1995. Both the international organization and the local club donate money to several causes, including scholarships, cultural exchanges and medical programs. Club member Hans Beckers said Rotary has helped several humanitarian programs in Cambodia, including efforts to eradicate polio and provide eyeglasses and eye surgery to those in need. ³One of the slogans of the club is service above self,² he said. The club is sending young Cambodians from a local agricultural school to Australia for two years, and it has given money to help wounded soldiers. The donation to the soldiers was made at the request of King Norodom Sihanouk. The money donated to the mosquito net campaign came from the clubıs Sunshine Fund, collected from local members. Refugees who fled the factional fighting in Cambodia last year have been returning from camps in Thailand through repatriation centers in Sisophon in Banteay Meanchey province. National Malaria Center staff have distributed 600 mosquito nets bought with funds from the Cambodia Daily campaign to those returnees over the past five months. Many of the newly repatriated Cambodians move on to villages in forested and mountainous regions that have drug-resistant strains of malaria. The Rotary donation will pay for 595 nets that will help protect 1,785 people against malaria. The National Malaria Center intends to distribute the nets next month.
